Understanding Dementia: Facts and The Local Impact

Dementia is a progressive condition that affects memory, thinking, and behaviour.

It encompasses several types, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, Huntington’s disease, and mixed dementia.

  • Around 1 million people in the UK are currently living with dementia, with projections indicating this will rise to over 1.4 million by 2040 and 1.6 million by 2050.
  • One in three people born in the UK today is expected to develop a form of dementia in their lifetime.
  • In Brighton, 1.29% of people are diagnosed with dementia, slightly below the national average of 1.36%.
  • Dementia is one of the leading causes of disability in later life, ahead of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and stroke.

 The Growing Need for Care

With increasing life expectancy in the UK, now 78.6 years for men and 82.6 years for women, there are more people living into older age, and thus a greater demand for dementia care and support. There are currently over 9 million people aged 70 or above, and more than 600,000 people aged over 90 in the UK.
